Help Haiti

Useful links (donations, volunteering):

Got any other information? Better Ideas? Relevant comments would be appreciated।

Summer 2011 update: In some of my comments I referred to Martine Cauthen, a Haitian-American english teacher, and I praised her efforts to offer relief to the affected Haitians. It turned out that Martine is the niece of the newly elected Haiti's president, Mr Michel Martelly, a fact I was completely unaware of at the time I posted my comments. I would like to make clear that there was no intention from my part to favor any political party, group or faction or any person involved in Haitian politics, by posting these comments. It is the Haitians themselves who should decide about their leadership and their future, not the rest of us.

  1. Two more links sent to me via email:

    http://www.yele.org
    https://secure.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_haiti/

I didn't know of them, so I can't provide any information about their credibility, where and how donations will be spent, etc.

My advice in general, would be to cross check before donating.

  6. I don't think online petitions can change a lot of things, but if you 'd like to give it a try, here's where you can ask creditors cancel Haiti's debt.

    http://one.org/international/actnow/haiti/index.html?rc=haitipaste

Were the IMF, World Bank etc. willing to do so, that would really help, though.

  7. Here is a nice email from Suzanne who tried to leave her comment here, but it wouldn't appear, for some technical reason obviously. Read on:

I saw your sweet note on Martine's blog about Haiti. I'm following her too and it really is heartbreaking...I have been to Haiti and the whole thing is so heartbreaking, so sad.....I left Martine a note on her "about" page because I don't think she can see any tweets from us unless she is following us too. Right now, I think her little heart/head are suffering from the long term stress..it's hard to keep sustaining yourself under those kinds of emergency conditions...Like "instant PTSD".

. I tried to leave a comment on your blog but it would not work, so I thought I would email you.

You have a terrific photo blog! :) I've listed you on my blog roll.

Thanks for helping spread the word. I'm following you now on Twitter too!

God bless Haiti and here's hoping several things:

That the banks will speed up the process of donations too--when you send a "yele" text 501501 for example, it can take up to 6 weeks for that money to actually "hit the ground" ---so I was talking to one of the tellers at my bank about this and she said that her boss (just a regular person at manager level) was working on an idea for the bank to get a notification, and to then wire the funds at no charge, and that theoretically the money could be "there" in 3 days no matter where you are in the world. So pray for this little bank manager that the upper Ups listen to him! :)

  8. And some more precious information from Suzanne, to which I add my suggestion to anyone involved in the banking system to figure out, if possible, more efficient ways for the donations to reach their destination:

"Hi there! Great to hear from you....yes, feel free to share my comment....
I wrote some more about that on my blog:
    http://makinsense.wordpress.com (Donations to Haiti)
I am still talking to my bank and they say that they everyone is working hard trying to figure out faster methods...so hopefully, I will have more information to share when they figure out. I will let you know!
    :)
there's many poor people in US and they cannot afford to donate, but they are attending their church services, and lighting candles in their homes for Haiti and praying...this helps too!

Also, although I don't think people are ready to hear it, but the flow of money into Haiti will be very good in the long term too..not just to "get over the crisis" but will help to build a BETTER Haiti ---more schools, more hospitals, more business, more everything for them.

Peace and "brotherly love" to you !
    Very best wishes ---
    Suzanne"

    ALPHA BANK: 149002002005570

    (VISA, Mastercard)

  11. Interesting site about children in Haiti:

    http://www.haitichildren.com

I found it in Martine Cauthen's excellent blog "From the big city to a 3rd world country", which I highly recommend as a reading: http://tiniinayiti.wordpress.com

  12. Martine seems to be doing a great work down there, to help the victims as much as she can and provide information to the rest of the world. She suggests the Baptist Haiti Mission as a reliable organization to send donations to; in her own words "if you donate it will go straight to the organization".

More about Martine's efforts here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
You can also watch a short interview of her in some of the above pages.

  13. I also received an email about trade-unions actions. Here are some links: USA, Canada., UK, Australia.
The International Trade Unions Confederation calls for action and so does the World Federation of Trade Unions.

More news about trade unionists efforts to help in Haiti can be found here.
